Good afternoon, thanks for joining us. I'm Cory Kessler at the cnn Center in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

A pious experience turned deadly for at least 24 people from Poland. Rescue workers are at the charred remains of the bus that was carrying the pilgrims back from a holy site in the French Alps. The bus veered off the road and plunged down an embankment before bursting into flames. Firefighters say the bus had a problem with its brakes as it made the steep descent near the city of Grenoble. They say as many as 50 people were on the bus and most of them were elderly.

Central Britain is struggling to keep its head above the water as it is hit with some of the worst flooding in the century. Emergency workers continue taking those stranded from their homes and thousands are in shelters waiting for the water to subside. Insurers say the total bill for damages could reach into the hundreds of millions.

Some dramatic rescues are underway in Texas as floodwaters rise. Near San Antonio, dozens of Amtrak passengers were stuck for about eight hours on Saturday after flooding stopped the train in its tracks. Dozens of other people in the other parts of the state were also rescued from high water. No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.

Wildfires are causing some big problems in several western states. In Utah, temperatures near 100 and low humidity are helping fire spread. Ten of them are burning right now. One blaze in the central part of the state is threatening at least two dozen homes. Some local firefighters are running low on resources. Help from federal authorities arrives today to combat a fire burning south of Salt Lake City.

Well, that wasn't quite as exciting as originally scripted. But David Beckham has finally made his American soccer debut. The English football superstar was unable to play a full game with his new team--the LA Galaxy on Saturday. The reason, a nagging ankle injury. But Beckham did come in as a substitute and played the last 12 minutes in an exhibition match. There he is NO.23. The Galaxy lost, one to nothing.
