Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
President Bush says the group Al Qaeda in Iraq is getting key support from outside the country and that shows how much Al Qaeda affiliates are collaborating around the world. The president is today in South Carolina where he just wrapped up a speaking at the Charleston Air Force Base. He says the link between Al Qaeda in Iraq and Osama Bin Laden is clear. The White House said the president was reviewing newly declassified information about how Al Qaeda operates.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning that he will fix the recent problems associated with the Justice Department. Once again, he says he has no intentions of resigning. The panel hopes to get to the bottom of who was behind the firing the US attorneys last year, eight of them. Many Democrats feel the firings were politically motivated.
The South Korean hostages situation will be solved peacefully. According to a Taliban spokesman, 23 South Korean aide workers have been held in Afghanistan since Thursday when they were seized by the Taliban. The kidnapper threatened to kill them if their demands weren't met. Negotiations are reportedly going well with South Korea. The Taliban says the Afghan government has not tried hard enough to solve the problem.
Swamped, soaked and stranded, more than a million people remain trapped by floodwaters across western England. Nearly 350,000 are running out of safe drinking water. Red Cross workers and British troops are hand-delivering bottle water and other supplies to them. No deaths or injuries have been reported from the flooding and officials wanna keep it that way, urging people to stay out of the increasingly filthy waters.
And a follow-up now to four New Orleans hospital deaths in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A Grand Jury just today decided to indict, would rather declined to indict Doctor Anna M. Pou, the surgeon who had been accused of killing her patients at Memorial Medical Center. The Attorney General's investigation had concluded hospital workers killed four people with a lethal cocktail during those chaotic days after the hurricane nearly two years ago. The doctor and two nurses were arrested last summer. Their lawyers say they acted heroically by staying to treat patients rather than evacuating.
Just two weeks out of rehab, Lindsay Lohan is already in trouble again. Santa Monica police say she was arrested early this morning on five charges. Those include Driving Under the Influence and cocaine possession. Five days ago, Lohan was booked on misdemeanor charges connected to a May drunken driving incident where she slammed her convertible into a curb. The actress will be back in court on August 24th.
