Well, I hope you are having a good afternoon. I’m Cory Kessler at the cnn center in Atlanta. Let’s take a look now at what’s happening right Now In The News.
Iraqis are celebrating their national soccer team’s victory at the Asian Cup finals in Jakarta. Iraq defeated 3-time-champion Saudi Arabia 1 to nothing. Until tomorrow morning, Baghdad is under a curfew set in anticipation of possible violence following the game.
2 US soldiers assigned to the Multi-National Division-Baghdad were killed today. One was killed in a small arms fire just north of Baghdad during a small arms attack; the other was killed during combat operations in the eastern Baghdad. So far, 69 US troops have been killed this month in Iraq.
At least 6 people were killed and 22 wounded when an explosion ripped through a tour bus in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Police say it appears an explosive device went off inside the bus. Among the dead are 2 women, 2 men, and 2 female bystanders. No one has claimed responsibility and the blast is under investigation. Police say they believe Kashmiri militants planted the bomb on the bus.
At least 9 people remain in Chicago hospitals after a shooting Saturday morning on the city’s south side. Police say they were all attending a party when a gunman opened fire on the group. The shooter got away. All 9 victims are in stable condition now. They tell police they never saw who fired the shots.
A fast-growing fire in Montana is burning near Glacier National Park. The wind-whipped wildfire jumped over control lines expanding from 420 acres to about 1,000 acres in a matter of hours. A lodge was evacuated and a 24-mile stretch of highway had to be closed.
Police are searching for some Illinois suspects who vandalized the car with bologna. Yes, I said it: b-o-l-o-g-n-a. Police say someone used strips of lunchmeat to spell up profanity on a car’s hood. Officials say whoever did it was likely intoxicated at the time.
And those are the stories this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is your source online, on TV or when you are on the go. I’m Cory Kessler.
