Good afternoon, I am Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at some of the stories that are happening NOW IN THE NEWS today.

Doctors released Chief Justice John Roberts from a Maine hospital earlier today. He suffered a benign, idiopathic seizure yesterday. That means doctors could not find any underlying psychological cau(se), ah, physiological cause rather for that seizure.

Supporters of the White House's so-called troop surge in Iraq say the strategy is in fact beginning to work. US troop casualties have been going down since May. And this month's death toll is at the lowest in eight months. Critics say the good news has more to do with deal struck with former Sunni insurgents. Of that, they say could haunt the US later on.

Rescuers are on the scene of a construction collapse in Oroville, California about 90 miles north of Sacramento. A FedEx truck was pinned under at least 2 fallen I-beams from a bridge construction project. The driver of that FedEx truck has now been rescued and is on route to the hospital. All those steel beams are said to weigh 10, 000 pounds each.

Police near Charleston, South Carolina have found the bodies of a 4-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl in trash bags under the sink of an apartment. Police said the mother was taken to a hospital after she talked about hurting herself. The county coroner said she left the kids in a hot car all day while she went to work yesterday. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine what caused their deaths.

Success for House Democratic leaders pushing for tougher ethics laws. The House voted to require lawmakers to provide more details about their bids to fund pet projects. The bill also tightens rules concerning fundraising help for lobbyists. The measure passed by an overwhelming margin 411 to 8. Supporters of a similar measure in the Senate hope to get their version passed a little later this week.
