Hello. I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
The former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and three retired generals are on Capital Hill answering questions about the death of Corporal Pat Tillman. He is the army ranger who quit the NFL to enlist after the 9·11 attacks and then died in Afghanistan three and a half years ago. Even though the army quickly suspected he was killed by friendly fire, the Pentagon didn't admit that publicly for more than a month. Rumsfeld says he can't recall when he first learned friendly fire might have been the cause, but he rejects any talk of a cover-up.
In Georgia today, police are investigating a triple homicide. Detectives say a mother and her two daughters were found dead this morning in Powder Springs which is northwest of the City of Atlanta. Two boys including the woman's son were found unconscious. Do stay with cnn and cnn. com for more on this developing story.
Taliban militants say the remaining 21 South Koreans they are holding hostage in Afghanistan are still alive. So far the Afghan government has refused to give in to the militants' demands. They have threatened to kill all the hostages unless some Taliban prisoners are released. Two of the hostages have been killed. The South Koreans, all members of a church group, were abducted two weeks ago.
A Somali man is expected to get a 10-year jail sentence for plotting to blow up an Ohio shopping mall last November. Nuradin Abdi pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. Authorities say he suggested blowing up the Columbus Ohio Mall in a meeting with a convicted al-Qaeda member. His attorney says Abdi decided to plead guilty rather than risk life in prison.
Rupert Murdoch is adding another key piece to his media empire. His news corporation is buying Dow Jones & Company, the owner of the Wall Street Journal. The two sides nailed down a 5-billion-dollar deal last night. It ends a several-month struggle between Murdoch and the family which owns a controlling share in Dow Jones. Murdoch's empire also includes New York Post, Myspace. com and all the Fox Television Networks.
