Good afternoon, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

And first, some breaking news out of southern Indiana this afternoon. Three people are dead following a construction accident at a mining complex in Princeton, Indiana. Police say the people who died were in a basket and the accident happened during work on an airshaft and did not happen inside the mine.

Still no sign of life hours after drilling crews' breakthrough in Utah. Just before midnight, they reached the chamber where the six miners are believed to be trapped. The mine's co-owner says the men may simply be hunkered down somewhere else. Bob Murray says air samples show there is plenty of oxygen.

The suspect in the execution-style murders of three college students in New Jersey in Newark says he is not guilty of murder. Using a Spanish language interpreter, Jose Carranza said he understood the charges and entered his plea this morning. Carranza is an illegal immigrant who has had at least three prior arrests. A second suspect in the triple murder, a 15-year-old boy, is also in custody and he pleaded not guilty.

Congress did not pass the immigration reform bill it wanted. So the Bush administration is turning to existing laws to step up enforcing immigration policy. Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff says details include raising fines on employers who don't comply with federal rules on hiring immigrants. The plan also calls for overhauling some temporary guest worker programs and increase deployment of border agents. Those steps don't require any new federal funds.

And heat wave is baking the US. Record temperatures have been set in several cities. A whether center has listed more than a dozen cities with record high temperatures. Among them, Columbia, South Carolina 106, Raleigh, North Carolina 104. The oppressive heat reaches from the Carolinas to New Orleans into the Plains.

And those are the headlines for you at this hour on this Friday, the 10th of August. For more on these stories or other news of the day, remember cnn is your source, whether you are surfing the web, watching television or on the go with your cellphone.
