A good Sunday to you. I'm Cory Kessler at the cnn.com newsroom in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Media mogul Merv Griffin is dead. A statement from his family says he lost his battle with prostate cancer. For us Griffin created the popular game shows "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune". The entertainer and entrepreneur was 82 years old.
The leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan say they'll work together to combat the threats from Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf addressed a closing session of a tribal assembly in Kabul today. Seven hundred tribal leaders and politicians were part of the four-day assembly, or jirga. All of the delegates pledged that the governments and leaders of both countries would not allow training centers or sanctuaries for terrorists on their soil.
Rescuers in Western Kenya are working against the odds that they would find any more survivors of Saturday's mudslides. Officials say as many as 20 people are believed to be buried under the mud. The first mudslide struck sleeping villagers before dawn. A second swept away others trying to rescue them.
Rescuers plan to drill a third hole to reach six trapped coal miners in Utah. A camera lowered into the collapsed coal shaft Saturday showed an open cavity and drinkable water, giving rescuers some hope. But efforts to signal the men underground for nearly a week have so far received no response at all.
The skies over some neighborhoods near Sacramento, California lit up Saturday evening. An amateur photographer captured this image of a huge fireball falling towards the city. Some say it was a meteor and they report hearing a huge explosion just before the object hit the ground. Experts are still trying to determine if the huge fireball was indeed a meteor. Interesting.
