Hello. I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
President Bush calls his trusted political advisor Karl Rove a great colleague, a good friend and a brilliant mind who'll be greatly missed. Rove, one of the most powerful and controversial figures in Washington, has announced his resignation, effective August 31st. Rove, who was considered the mastermind of President Bush's election victories, said (I quote)"I just think it's time".
Taliban militants in Afghanistan have freed two female South Korean hostages. The governor of Ghazni Province tells cnn they've been handed over to the province's political offices. The two were among 23 volunteer South Korean workers kidnapped in mid-July. The militants have since killed two male hostages, still holding 19 others. The Taliban have demanded nearly two dozen militant prisoners to be released in exchange for the South Koreans' lives.
Here's a small town in Southwestern Missouri that's been rocked by a bloody church shooting. Neosho police say a man burst into a church yesterday afternoon, opened fire on a group holding a service there. Some of his relatives were in the church at the time. Authorities say Eiken Elam Saimon shot and killed three people and wounded at least five others. Police say the shooting was fueled by an incident Saturday night. A source tells cnn the suspect had been accused of an assault against a 14-year-old girl.
Rescue teams are drilling a third hole today at a collapsed mine in Utah. Six men have been trapped underground for a week now. A camera lowered into the mine showed what crews called "survivable space". So far, though, no sign of the men. The trapped men are thought to be nearly three miles from the mine entrance. It could be several more days before crews reach them.
You've likely noticed gas prices have been heading south continued to do so. The price of self-serve regular fell more than 10 cents in the past couple of weeks to a national average of $2.78 a gallon. According to the Lundberg Survey, gas prices were down 28 cents in the last month, more than 40 cents since mid-May. Cheapest gas, it happened to be in the region that's in Saint Louis where it's 2. 52 a gallon, and the priciest gas, find them in Chicago at $3. 15.
You are up-to-date. Those are the headlines for you at this hour. Do stay with cnn for more on these stories and other news of the day.
