Forecasters are watching Dean as the one-time Category 5 superstorm churns across the Yucatan Peninsula. It has since been downgraded to Category 1 storm with top sustained winds of 85 miles an hour. But it will cross over more water where it could regain power before slams the coast of Mexico a second time.
Authorities had to rescue several motorists overwhelmed by water in Missouri. The southwestern part of the state got more than a foot of rain yesterday. It caused heavy flooding, damaged homes and washed out roads and bridges. In Oklahoma, people are trying to clean up the mess left by the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin. The governor has declared a state of emergency for 24 counties that suffered damage after that storm.
The seven-member crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour safely on the ground after days of concerns over damage done during take-off and also a mission cut short, a day short because of Hurricane Dean. A gouge in the spacecraft's protective tiles caused no problems as Endeavour glided into a picture-perfect landing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The touchdown completed an ambitious 13 days in orbit which included four spacewalks outside the International Space Station. The Endeavour crew continued the construction of the station and also delivered two and a half tons of supplies to the space station crew.
Funeral service has been held today for Utah rescue miner, Dale Black. He's one of three rescuers who died last week trying to reach the six men trapped in a coal mine. Funerals for the other two rescuers, miner Brandon Kimber and safety inspector Gary Jenson are also scheduled this week.
In Minnesota, remains of the last person missing in the I-35W bridge collapse have been recovered. Officials identify him as Gregory Jolstad. He was a member of the construction crew that was working on the bridge when it fell. Thirteen people died in the collapse three weeks ago.
