Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS on this Thursday.

Residents returning to check on their waterlogged homes in northern Ohio today. The town of Findlay is a big mess after the Blanchard River went some seven feet above flood stage. Storms and floods have ravaged several mid-western states. Since last weekend, at least 26 people have died. Thousands of homes are damaged or destroyed across that region.

Police are descending on a home in the Orlando area. They found the bodies of three men. A person called authorities asking them to check on a friend. The men are said to be in their thirties. Do stay with cnn and cnn.com for more on this developing story.

cnn has obtained a new National Intelligence Estimate showing both progress and problems in Iraq. It cites measurable but uneven improvements in Iraq's security situation. It also says Iraqi political leaders remain unable to govern effectively. And the report points to some military successes. It says the practice of pitting Sunni insurgents against al-Qaeda appears to have worked. And also in their report, there are concerns that Iraq's government will become more precarious over the next six to twelve months.

Police in Britain have arrested two teenagers in connection with the killing of an eleven-year-old boy. The shooting Wednesday evening in Liverpool was the latest in a string of youth killings. The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown calls it a heinous crime that has shocked the whole of the country.

It is another sweltering day in parts of the Midwest and the South. A grueling heat wave is blamed for fifty deaths including three this week. Triple-digit temperatures are setting records in at least four southern states and reaching north, to Ohio as well. Public schools in Dayton and Cincinnati are closed today because of the heat.
