Hope you are enjoying your Saturday afternoon. I'm Cory Kessler at the cnn.com newsroom in Atlanta. Let's take a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Two explosions have killed at least 31 people in Hyderabad in southern India. Forty others were injured. The first explosion was at an amusement park and a second was at a nearby eatery. One state official says (quote) "this is definitely terrorist activity" and is urging calm.
The bodies of a mother and daughter were found Saturday, less than a day after a hot-air balloon caught on fire in British Columbia. Several passengers managed to get out before the fire burned the tether, causing the balloon to rise off the ground with three people aboard. One of them is hospitalized after jumping out. The burning balloon plunged into a camping area.
We're there bracing for more floods in parts of the Midwest. Rain that fell in Wisconsin earlier this week is making rivers rise in northern Illinois. The Fox River is approaching 50-year levels. Water levels are still high in northwest Ohio. And more storms this weekend could keep that water from receding, making it impossible for some families to return home.
Rescue workers are making a last-ditch attempt to reach six trapped coal miners in Utah. Drilling equipment is expected to punch through to the mine by tomorrow. The mine owner says if this effort doesn’t yield any encouraging signs of the men, they'll abandon the search.
Sheriff’s deputies raided the home of rapper DMX and seized a dozen pit bulls which they said were (quote)"distressed". A sheriff spokesman said no arrests had been made in connection with the raid. The entertainer who was not home at the time said through his lawyer he was (quote)"extremely disturbed to hear that the animals were not being cared for properly." The rapper pleaded guilty in New Jersey in 2002 to charges of animal cruelty for neglecting 13 pit bulls.
And this could be the future of law enforcement in Germany. Check that out. State police there are thinking about adding the two-seat gyrocopters to their fleet of aircraft. An especially attractive feature is the price. The police could buy about 50 gyrocopters for the cost of one full-sized helicopter. More air surveillance for the bucks as well. (And) hey, looks pretty cool. Hum?
And there you have it. Those are the headlines this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is your source online, on TV, or when you're on the go. I'm Cory Kessler. Thanks for watching.
