Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS on this Monday.

The top commander in Iraq is appearing before Congress to explain why the US should not change course in Iraq. General David Petraeus is expected to use data demonstrating fewer roadside and car bomb attacks in Baghdad in recent months. Several Democrats say that data is questionable.

Senator Larry Craig has filed the court papers to try to withdraw his guilty plea and a disorderly conduct charge. The Idaho Republican was arrested this summer in the men's room of the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport. An undercover police officer says Craig made sexual advances toward him in the facility.

Republican senator Chuck Hagel is retiring from national politics. The Nebraska lawmaker announced earlier today he'll not seek re-election to the Senate when his term expires next year. Hagel also says he has no plans to run for president. Former Democratic Senator Bob Kerrey is among the names surfacing as candidates for Hagel's seat.

Portuguese police planned to turn over the Madeleine McCann case to the prosecutors some time today. Police say Gerry, Kate McCann are suspects in their daughter's disappearance. They returned to their home in England Sunday but may soon have to return to Portugal. The couple says they had no role in Madeleine's disappearance.

Officials in Denmark say everyone onboard escaped safely after this landing. That was a right wheel of a Scandinavian Airlines aircraft that collapsed while landing on Sunday. Now you may see the right wing slamming onto the runway, sparking a fire. The police counselor says 11 passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
