Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
A bail hearing is scheduled for O. J. Simpson on Wednesday. He is jailed right now in Las Vegas on charges related to an alleged armed robbery. The alleged incident happened last week. Simpson says he and some of his friends went to a hotel room of some sports memorabilia collectors and said they took back some of the items that had been stolen from him but that no weapons were used.
The Iraqi government has had enough of one American private security firm doing business in Iraq. Blackwater USA is one of many firms filling the security void in extremely dangerous areas. After a firefight that left 8 Iraqis dead, Baghdad revoked Blackwater's license to operate in Iraq. The State Department says it plans to investigate the incident.
President Bush has picked retired federal judge Michael Mukasey to replace Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. The New York State native is currently a judicial advisor to GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani and has received past endorsements from key Democrats.President Bush says some of Mukasey's most important legal experience is on terrorism. Sunday was Alberto Gonzales's last day as Attorney General.
Billionaire Richard Branson has pledged 200, 000 dollars to help pay legal bills for Kate and Gerry McCann. They are suspects in their daughter Madeleine's disappearance. Branson's already contributed to a 2-million-dollar fund to help find her. The McCanns are planning a massive ad campaign, urging people to keep looking for their little girl.
Lawyers for one of the Jena 6 will ask that the judge be removed on the case at a hearing today. Mychal Bell's lawyer say if they are successful, they'll ask for a new judge to release Bell. He was 16 at the time of the incident, now 17 and Appeals Court ruled Friday he should never have been tried as an adult. Bell and 5 other black students were initially charged with attempted murder with a beating of a white student. Civil rights leaders planned a massive protest in Jena, Louisiana on Thursday.
And a wrap-up of the box office recedes: Jodie Foster's "The Brave One" came out on top for its debut weekend, taking in 14 million dollars. "3: 10 to Yuma" slipped to second with more than 9 million dollars. Then rounding out the top 5: "Mr. Woodcock", "Dragon Wars" and "Superbad".
