Hello, I'm Melissa Long at the cnn center here in Atlanta on this Monday, October 1st. And here's a look at some of the stories happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Classes have been cancelled on the University of Memphis campus after a student was fatally shot. 21-year-old Taylor Bradford was a member of the university's football team. Campus police say he got into his car after being shot last night, drove a short distance and then crashed his car. Authorities say the initial investigation indicates Taylor was specifically targeted.
A murder suspect is on the loose in Statesville, North Carolina area. Several schools are in lockdown while authorities search for the man. He is wanted in connection with a man's body that was found in a wooded area over the weekend. 3 other suspects in that case have been arrested.
Police continue their search for Chester Arthur Stiles, the man they say videotaped himself raping a 3-year-old girl. Meantime the man who took the tape to police is said to make a court appearance in Nevada later today. 26-year-old Darren Tuck says he found that tape in a desert. Police say he held on to the tape for more than 5 months and admitted showing it to others. Tuck could be formally charged with child porn possession. The girl on the tape who is now seven was found by authorities on Friday.
US Supreme Court starts its new term today. And justices are preparing to tackle some tough issues like child pornography laws and executions by lethal injection. The court is also being asked to determine whether Guantanamo Bay detainees can use US civilian courts to challenge their indefinite imprisonment.
It expects some extra time in airports security lines? If your children want to bring remote-controlled toys on the plane, the TSA says the screeners would be checking those toys more closely because terrorists could use them to set off explosives. So, to make travel easier, the agency suggests packing remote-controlled devices in your checked luggage.
