Hello, I'm Melissa Long at the cnn center in Atlanta on this Tuesday, October 2nd. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
An Amber alert has been cancelled in Florida after 15-year-old Alyssa Frank turned up safe at a Wal-Mart. Police believe the teen met the suspect on MySpace, and snuck out in the middle of a night to meet him. Police are still looking for him, Bill Mitchell. He is registered as a sex offender considered armed and dangerous.
The FBI and Las Vegas police are taking the hunt for a child rape suspect Chester Stiles nationwide. He is accused of raping a little girl on video. Investigators say they are getting leads from all around the country. That little girl on the video was just 3 years old at the time; she's now 7. And police say she is safe.
US Supreme Court is looking at 2 cases involving drug sentencing. One stems from a federal judge's decision to slice a few years off a lengthy prison term for a drug conviction. The other case questions strict sentences for crack cocaine convictions. Mandatory sentences for crack or rock cocaine are much longer than for the powder form of the drug. Some say the system unfairly targets African-American offenders.
That video file in your inbox could infect your computer. Experts at Georgia Tech University say spammers are increasingly using video because most people have become more careful about opening email spam and look at this some spammers have even tried to use fake videos on YouTube. Other source spots can be social networking sites of blogs.
And finally Space Girls, Space, Spice not Space, Spice Girls mania. Tickets to their comeback concert in London sold in 38 seconds. A sellout, yes, in 38 seconds, more than a million people registered to buy the tickets. Tour organizers therefore added three more London shows. Scary, Sporty, Ginger, Posh and Baby will start their reunion tour December 2nd in Vancouver.
