I'm Reggie Aqui at the cnn center in Atlanta, here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
For the second time in as many months United Auto Workers have moved from the assembly line to the picket line. Last month there was General Motors, and today it's Chrysler. Some of the workers leaving a Chrysler plant in Michigan say that they're concerned about losing health benefits and other compensation.
A construction equipment hauler went up in a ball of flames after a contractor apparently hit and ruptured a gas line. Utility officials tell cnn affiliate WTVT that work crews couldn't move the truck before it caught fire. Now this all happened in Cary which is outside of Raleigh. No one has been hurt, but officials report that telephone lines and power pools are threatened.
President Bush is squaring off against Congressional Democrats and demanding they extend his expanded eavesdropping authority. Congress gave the president additional powers in a measure adopted over the summer, but that's gonna expire in February. Mr. Bush now wants to make that law permanent. He also insists that it provide retroactive legal immunity to telecommunication companies that have been helping the government conduct wiretaps without a warrant. House Democrats are proposing legislation that extends some of the provisions of the current law, but it doesn't provide immunity for the companies involved in that wiretapping. The House majority leader opened the door to that option but he would want the Bush Administration to detail what the companies did.
There is a new twist in that case of Atlantic City, New Jersey's missing mayor. A lawyer for Robert Levy has said that the mayor is resigning. Levy who hasn't been seen for two weeks is the target of a federal investigation into military disability payments for years. Levy has claimed that he served in Vietnam with the Green Berets. Last year he admitted that he didn't. A statement from his lawyer says that Levy stepped down due to multiple health problems.
Well, it looks like Boeing is running behind schedule. The company says it's gonna take additional six months to deliver the plane you see there, the 787, also known as a Dreamliner. The plane maker says it hits some snags but the plane should be in service by the end of next year. A big selling point for that airliner, well, it promises to use about 20% less fuel than today's similar size jets.
And that's we know this hour. Those are your headlines. Stay with cnn for more on these stories and the other news of the day.
