Afghanistan's government is cracking down on two private security companies. An official says the companies were shut down because employees were found to be carrying illegal weapons that had not been registered. He said he did not know the nationalities of the two companies. Now other private security companies are also said to be under scrutiny and may be shut down. The review comes on the heels of an incident in which security guards employed by the American firm Blackwater USA killed civilians in Iraq.
Television network cnn IBN in India says at least three people have been killed in a bomb attack at a revered Muslim shrine. The explosion happened just as Muslims were breaking their daily Ramadan fast. cnn IBN says twenty others were injured in the blast. Police forces are now on alert for reprisal attacks.
Schools are closed for the rest of the week in Cleveland, Ohio as students and teachers try to figure out what happened , what went wrong at Success Tech Academy. A 14-year-old boy was suspended two days earlier killed himself in the school yesterday after walking through the halls firing two guns. When the shooting was over, two teachers and two students were wounded. One teacher who was shot in the chest remains hospitalized in fair condition. A student who was shot in the side is in good condition. The other two have been treated and released.
Closing arguements will be heard today in the manslaughter case in Florida over a death at a juvenile boot camp. Yesterday the jury saw the video tape that prompted the Florida legislature to order all such camps closed. Prosecutors played the video in court showing guards hitting and kneeing Martin Anderson before he died. The defense argues Anderson died of complications from a blood disorder.
And Britney Spears wants to spend more time with her children. A lawyer for the pop singer took an emergency motion to a Los Angeles court, seeking to expand her visitation rights. She did not attend the hearing on the 1st of this month. A court commissioner ordered Spears to relinquish custody. The commissioner raised concerns about her drug and alcohol use. The order allows some visitation but said a monitor must watch Spears while she's with her sons who are ages one and two.
