Hi there, I'm Virginia Cha at the cnn center in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
We are monitoring severe weather in northern Florida. A tornado touched down in the Pensacola area, a line of violent thunderstorms is passing through there. It's knocked out power to thousands of customers on the western side of the city. We're told the shopping mall has been damaged. And some beach residents are reporting wind damage to their homes as well. The sheriff's office says the tornado could be seen tossing debris around. There are also tornado warnings still in effect for several Florida coastal cities.
FDA advisors are meeting today to debate the safety of cold medicine for young children. Last week drug makers voluntarily pulled infant versions of those medicines. Well, today the FDA is hearing from doctors who say the drugs don't work, and are not safe for kids up to age 6.
TSA security screeners at two of the country's busiest airports fail to find fake bombs hidden on undercover agents. USA Today obtained a classified report showing that last year screeners in Chicago and L. A. missed more than 60 percent of bomb parts hidden in carryons and clothing. The paper reports screeners at San Francisco's airport, for example, missed about 20 percent.
Senator Sam Brownback will drop out of the 2008 presidential race. Sources close to the senator say they told the Associated Press that Brownback's apparently ready to end his campaign, and campaign sources told cnn all scheduling for the Kansas's Republican is on hold pending a major announcement tomorrow. Brownback has had trouble raising enough money to stay in the race and has consistently polled among the bottom tier of major Republican candidates.
Britney Spears has temporarily lost her visitation rights with her kids. A judge has ruled the pop star can not see the children until she complies with court orders in her custody battle with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. It's not clear what exactly led to this new ruling. Since October 3rd, Spears's ex-husband Federline has had custody of their children.
