Hi, everyone. I'm Asieh Namdar at the cnn. com newsroom in Atlanta. Here's a look at what is happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Three fast-moving wildfires are tearing to the posh Malibu hills area of southern California. Several multimillion-dollar homes have already gone up in flames. Hundreds more are threatened. Residents and students at nearby Pepperdine University have been forced to evacuate. At least one hundred acres have been burned in that area.

Turkey's Parliament has convened an emergency session to respond to border attacks by Kurdish PKK rebels that killed 12 soldiers. Turkey says it killed dozens of rebels in response. Its Defense Minister told his US counterpart that for now no urgent military action is planned though.

An Iraqi official says Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki met with the top US commander General David Petraeus. He is protesting a Baghdad raid which killed fifteen civilians. The US denies it, saying it was targeting the leader of an Iranian-funded kidnapping operation and that 49 criminals were killed.

World financial leaders are pledging to help people deal with the recent mortgage meltdown and resulting credit crisis. Policy makers with the International Monetary Fund wrapped up their meeting yesterday. They called for more supervision of lenders to avoid future problems in the mortgage industry. Demonstrators took to streets again yesterday to protest IMF meetings. They called for an end to the World Bank. The protests were mostly peaceful.

At the box office, the horror flick "30 Days of Night"(影片名:极夜三十天) took a bite out of a competition. It earned 16 million dollars for its opening weekend and that's according to studio estimates. The thriller about vampires in the Alaska stars Josh Hartnett. Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married" slipped to second place in its second week of release with just over 12 million dollars. And Ben Affleck's directorial debut "Gone Baby Gone"(影片名:失踪人口) failed to pick up much steam at the box office despite good reviews . It brought in 6 million dollars for the weekend, enough for the fifth place.
