Hello to you from the cnn net world headquarters here in Atlanta, I'm Melissa Long on this Monday, here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS on this Oct. 22.
Wildfires are burning out of control across much of southern California today. It's strong winds and hot, dry conditions fueling about a dozen fires from Santa Barbara south to the border. Classes are cancelled at three universities and nursing homes and a hospital are being evacuated. Thousands of residents have already fled. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in seven counties.
A violent outburst at a US Navy barracks in Bahrain left two female sailors dead. Navy officials say a male sailor shot them then himself. He survived as being treated at a military hospital under heavy security . The motive for the attack unknown at this time but navy officials stressed it had nothing to do with terrorism.
A report of a Kurdish ceasefire is not satisfying Turkish citizens. They're calling for a stronger crackdown on Kurdish rebels. More than 2000 protestors in Turkey denounced the weekend attack by PKK rebels.The ambush killed at least 12 Turkish soldiers and eight are still missing. US and Iraqi leaders are pushing Ankara to hold off on any massive military operation. They worried that it would further destabilize Iraq and the region.
The President of Mongolia was at the White House today to sign a pact that provides US financial aid to poor countries. It is called the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact. Government's preceding grants Mashu they operate openly and have programmes against corruption. For Mongolia , it will provide 285 million dollars to help modernize the country's railroads and infrastructure.
And General Motor is back in the driver's seat at least for today. The automaker has narrowly edged out Toyota to become the global auto sales leader once again. However, one analyst says that GM regaining the No. 1 spot does not mean the competitive challenge from Toyota is behind it and that they may just trade the top spot on a quarter to quarter basis.
