Hello, I'm Melissa Long at the cnn center here in Atlanta. It's a Tuesday October 23. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
President Bush has declared an emergency in parts of southern California. Nearly 7 hundred homes have been destroyed so far, most of them in the witch fire outside of San Diego. Right now, the largest evacuation in San Diego County's history is underway. More than 300 thousand people have been ordered to leave their homes across southern California.
British Prime Minister Golden Brown says the UK is committed to working with Turkey as tensions mount along the border with Iraq. He and the Turkish Prime Minister have been talking in London. Mr. Brown also called on Iraq to pressure Kurdish rebels in the north. Turkish leaders have pledged to exhaust all diplomatic avenues before taking any military action.
It was a flawless launch for the space shuttle Discovery just a short time ago. The crew begins a fourteen-day mission to the International Space Station. Some concerns threatened to delay the launch, but they were resolved. It looks like the weather was beautiful.
The controversy over America's plans for a Missile Defense Shield in Europe has taken on a new twist. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says Washington may delay activating the shield until it has(quote)"definitive proof of a missile threat from Iran". Gates says this is a proposal for the Russians. And they are opposed to the idea of an American Missile Defense Shield been built in Eastern Europe.
More rain is expected today in New Orleans. Parts of the Crescent City are already flooded after more than 8 inches of rain fell there yesterday. It left some in waist-deep water. All the city's drainage pumps are working but they can't keep up with the rainfall.
