Hello, I'm Melissa Long at the cnn center here in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS on this Wednesday.

In southern California hope may be on the horizon, but for thousands of people, the next several hours will mean everything. More than a dozen wildfires are sweeping across the landscape before Mother Nature can provide her own relief. More than a thousand homes have already burned to the ground. Close to a million people are on the run, trying to stay one step ahead of the flames. Many have lost everything.

The price tag for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could top two trillion dollars over the next decade. The head of the Budget Office for Congress is testifying on Capitol Hill this afternoon about the new cost estimate and a White House request for additional war funding. Democrats said the Bush Administration spends too much on wars and too little on education and healthcare programs. The White House says the war on terror must be won at all costs.

A program in Maine that would give prescription birth control to middle schoolers could see some changes. A school clinic in Portland, Maine approved the controversial measure last week. But a proposed change would restrict birth control to students who are at least 14. The proposal would also give parents more control and allow them to block access to the contraceptives. The clinic has been supplying condoms for years.

Today, Asia's biggest motor show opened to the press for a sneak preview of over five hundred new vehicles. This year's trend has a major emphasis on making cars that are fun to drive, while staying eco-friendly. That's an amazing vehicle! Highlights of the show, include a car that lets you drive sideways, and a single-seat vehicle designed to drive down sidewalks as well as the streets and there it is. The motor show will open to the public after being traveling in Bangkok, traveling in Asia Sunday.
