Good afternoon, I’m Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
President Bush has arrived in southern California to get a first hand look at the wildfire destruction. He will take an aerial tour to scorched areas with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He also plans to visit San Diego neighborhood and have lunch with first responders before returning to Washington. The president has declared a major disaster in seven California counties.
Investigators suspect arson in at least two of the fires. Local and federal officials are looking into the San Diego fire in Orange County and the roadsive fire in Riverside County. Authorities in San Bernardino County also arrested a man on arson charges after a witness saw him near where a fire started Tuesday.
There are stepped-up security today at a Michigan middle school after four people were shot near the football field. Saginaw Police say gunfire broke out a short distance from the field where two middle schools were playing yesterday. Two students and two adults were wounded. A sixteen-year-old student is still in the hospital in critical condition today. The other three were treated and released. And police say they’re questioning someone described as a person of interest.
Nobel Prize winner James Watson is resigning immediately as chancellor of a renowned research lab. Watson has been at the center of controversy after recently making some racist remarks. He suggested blacks are not as smart as whites, and are not equal genetically. Watson was suspended earlier this month from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He won the 1962 Nobel Prize for his work discovering the structure of DNA.
And it was hugs and kisses in space this morning as the shuttle Discovery successfully docked for their rendezvous with the International Space Station. With the hookup, astronauts now face one of the most challenging construction tasks ever on a mission. Discovery docked after a backflip. This is video sped up two hundred percent. Engineers were looking for any launch-related damage. And the astronauts have five constructed related space walks ahead of them.
