From the cnn center in Atlanta, I'm Nicole Lapin. Here's a look at what's happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.
cnn's **(记者名,很抱歉,没查到) has just reported that a high ranked US army officer was just wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in his vehicle, right near his vehicle actually, in north Baghdad. He's been identified now as Brigadier General Jeffrey Dorko, commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers Gulf Coast Region as stationed in Baghdad. Now Dorko is reported to have been wounded by shrapnel and has been evacuated to a US hospital in Germany. General Dorko is believed to be the highest-ranked US military officer to be wounded in the Iraq War.
Meanwhile, there are new major developments in the aftermath of that fake news conference that FEMA held on the California wildfires. Well, FEMA's Public Affairs Chief John Philbin ur, was supposed to take over a new job today, as chief spokesman for the National Intelligence Director. Apparently that's not going to happen and there is no word yet on whether or not Philbin was let go, or he voluntarily decided to take a new position. Well, the people behind last week's briefing in Washington have got in a lot of heat lately. FEMA gave real reporters only 15 minutes to arrive. And when no one showed up, it had to ask its own staffers to ask their own questions.
And investigators are now saying that this massive house fire that killed seven college students over the weekend may have been an accident, at least that's the word from Debbie Smith, the mayor of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. This is where the fire happened. She also said that investigators might not be able to narrow down exactly what started the blaze.
Meanwhile, firefighters have contained more than a dozen fires burning now in southern California. They really hope to control seven others within the upcoming week. They say that they are keeping an eye, a very close eye on these strong winds in the forecasters as well. Well, meanwhile, arson investigators are looking for a white Ford F150 truck that might lead them to whatever set the San Diego fire. That's the bigger one. Overall the fires have already destroyed more than 2000 homes.
And over in New York, two New York city, firefighters are accused of torching a fire house in Manhattan. The suspects didn't work at the station in house kitchen. But thankfully, no one was hurt in Saturday's blaze. But both men are facing felony charges of arson, reckless engagement and criminal mischief. And a fire commissioner calls this whole thing outrageous, but however, there is no possible word on why they did this.
We'll keep you up-to-date with that one. But for now, those are the headlines at this hour. cnn is always your place to turn for the latest headlines whether you are watching on line, watching on television or watching on your cell phone when're on the go. Thanks for watching.
