Hey, there. I'm Joshua Levs at the cnn Center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening Now In The News.
We begin in Pakistan where martial law is now in effect. President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency earlier today. The Supreme Court rejected that move when shortly after Mr. Musharraf expelled the Court Chief Justice and replaced him. There are reports now that a massive crackdown could unfold soon including the arrests of government opponents. Meanwhile opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has flown back to Pakistan from Dubai. A spokesman says she is sitting on a plane at the Karachi Airport, waiting to see if she will be arrested or maybe deported.
In Indonesia, a volcano in the island of Gaba has started to erupt, causing panic among villagers. Scientists have been predicting for weeks that Mount Kelut would erupt and thousands of residents have been evacuated. There's fear that a massive lake in the crater might spill, causing super hot mudslides. Authorities say they have not seen an explosion or lava flow yet because the volcano is hidden right now by clouds.
Top distant runner Ryan Shade has died. The 28-year-old collapsed at the US men's qualifying trials in New York about five miles into the race. Emergency crews responded quickly, taking Shade to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
Do you recognize this little girl? These are police composite sketches of a two or three-year-old child that police are calling baby Grace. The child's body was found in a large plastic container on an uninhabited island near Guavas in Texas. She was wearing shoes like these. Police are trying to determine her identity.
Well, the final scene has not yet been written but contract talks are not going well for writers of your favorite TV shows. If writers and producers can not agree on a new contract by tomorrow, the Writers' Union says its members will walk out. If the writers do walk, it will be their first strike in 20 years.
And you are now up-to-date. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is your source online, on TV, or when you are on the go!
