Hello, and good Sunday to you, I'm Stacey Elgin at the cnn.com newsroom in Atlanta. Here now is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Day two of a martial law in Pakistan, police are rounding up hundreds of lawyers, judges and activists. This comes one day after President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency which the Prime Minister says will be imposed as long as necessary. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is watching those developments while on a visit to Jerusalem. She says the US will review financial aid to Pakistan which gets billions of dollars from Washington.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy is on his way back from Chad. With him are 7 of 21 people who had been arrested accused of being involved with a French-based charity that tried to fly 103 children to Europe for adoption. There are concerns that some of the children may not be orphans.
Well, one person is under arrest now after a huge pile-up on a California highway. Police say the man is charged with drunken driving but they don't think he caused yesterday's crash. They are blaming dense fog for the accident that involved more than 100 cars and trucks and two people were killed and more than three dozen were taken to the hospital.
Well, before you drop those burgers on the grill this weekend, be sure to check the label. Cargill is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that could be infected with E. coli. It's the second round of a voluntary recall for the company in less than a month. The meat was sold at Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis and stores across the country. Cargills says no cases of E.coli have been associated with the meats.
Well, Jerry Seinfeld and his bees were no match for the star power of Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe at the box office this weekend. "American Gangster" which stars Crowe as a detective investigating a drug kingpin played by Washington drew in the biggest crowds over the weekend, making a whopping 46 of million dollars plus. That's according to studio estimates and that would make it the biggest opening for an R-rated crime drama in history. The animated "Bee movie" featuring the voices of Seinfeld and Renee Zellweger took second place with over 39 million dollars. And horror sequel "Saw-4" earned 11 million dollars this weekend, enough for the third place slot.
Well, you are now up-to-date. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is your source online, on TV or when you're on the go. I'm Stacey Elgin, thanks for logging on.
