Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta. It is Monday, November 5th, and here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
We begin with the deepening crisis in Pakistan. The mix of violent clashes overflowing jails and a media blackout are sending this country on a downward spiral. The United States and Britain are urging President Pervez Musharraf to end the state of emergency and restore civilian rule. More than 1500 attorneys have been arrested across the country. Police stations are packed with detainees, forcing officials to use Pakistani schools as temporary detention facilities. More than 60 members of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's party have also been arrested.
President Bush is meeting with Turkey's Prime Minister today in hopes of keeping Turkish forces from going after Kurdish rebels in Iraq. Tens of thousands of Turkish troops are now amassed along the border. The Turkish leader is looking for Washington to take action against the Kurdish rebels who have crossed into Turkey to stage attacks. The rebels have been fighting for autonomy for Turkish's Kurds since 1984. Europe and the US designate the group as terrorists.
At least five crew members who became sick on a US Airways flight are now hospitalized. Both the crew and passengers complained of a sulfur-like smell aboard the aircraft as it left Washington D.C. on route for Boston. The flight returned to D.C everyone was put on a different flight. The crew members still became ill but none of the passengers reported feeling sick.
Your favorite television and movie stars could soon fall speechless. Screenwriters are out on strike today. The walkout was expected after talks between producers and the Writers Guild fell through. Screenwriters are seeking a bigger slice of revenue from emerging sources like DVD sales in the Internet. The strike will affect some programming, such as talk shows and soap operas almost immediately. Features films and dramatic television shows will be hit if the strike lingers on.
And on board the Discovery today the crew is conducting a routine late-inspection of the shuttle's heat shield before it can come back home. Astronauts are looking for any damage that may have been caused by micrometeorite or by orbiting space debris. Earlier today, the shuttle undocked from the International Space Station after a 11-day stay. Discovery is scheduled to land on Wednesday.
And you are up-to-date. Those are the headlines making news at this hour. And do stay with cnn for more on these stories or other news of the day.
