Hello, I'm Melissa Long at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
A high school in the heart of Miami is in lockdown while police are searching for two suspects in an armed robbery attempt. School officials say a male teacher on his way back from lunch off campus was shot near the school. The two that attempted to rob the teacher ran into an apartment near the school. The teacher has been taken to a hospital. There's no word yet on his condition.
A second straight day police in Pakistan clashed with lawyers protesting the state of emergency ordered by President Pervez Musharraf. Police sources say officers are getting cash bonuses for beating and arresting lawyers. Three thousand have been jailed so far. Pakistan's Chief Justice has been thrown off the bench when he is calling on people to restore the constitution. President Bush has called on Musharraf to end the state of emergency, restore democratic civilian rule and hold early elections.
Retired Federal Judge Michael Mukasey is one step closer to becoming Attorney General. This morning the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11 to 8 in favor of confirmation. The nomination now goes before the full Senate. Several committee Democrats had objected Mukasey's statements on harsh interrogation methods including water boarding which simulates drowning. Mukasey later said he'd enforce any law Congress might enact against water boarding.
A man accused of killing a Philadelphia police officer last week is under arrest in Miami. A call to 911 tipped off Miami police that 21-year-old John Lewis was at a homeless shelter in that city. He was taken in without incident. Philadelphia police identified Lewis as the suspect in the shooting over the weekend. Officer Chuck Cassidy was fatally wounded when he walked into a doughnut shop robbery.
And this is sure to hit your wallet no matter where you live. Crude oil has hit a new high. 97 dollars a barrel in future is trading in New York. Traders are worried about pre-winter supplies, so they are bidding prices up. They slid a little after touching 97. Tomorrow the Energy Department releases its weekly inventory report and traders are afraid of what they might hear.
And those are the headlines. Do stay with cnn for more on these stories or other news of the day.
