Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been released from house arrest. Government troops had used barbed wire and concrete barriers to block her from leaving her villa in Islamabad. It blocked Bhutto from leaving because she was planning to defy a ban on political gatherings. Bhutto was set to address a mass rally against the state of emergency imposed by President Musharraf.
The woman who died in custody at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix says she was intoxicated and strangled herself. The report says Carol Gotbaum was acutely intoxicated on alcohol and prescription drugs when she died in a holding cell. Gotbaum was on her way to a rehab center in Tucson when she was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge.
The pharmaceutical company Merck is settling thousands of lawsuits linked to its painkiller VIOXX. The payouts will cost the company close to five billion dollars. Merck withdrew the drug after a study showed it raised the risk of heart attacks in some patients.
Environmentalists are racing to save marine life from a 58, 000-gallon oil spill in the San Francisco Bay. A tanker ship collided with a support tower for the bay bridge yesterday. Officials say tides have already carried the oil 40 miles north of the city. San Francisco's mayor says the city will sue anyone found liable for the spill.
And America's next attorney general will be sworn in this afternoon. The Senate worked late into the night to confirm Michael Mukasey. Some Democrats complained about the former federal judge's refusal to say whether the interrogation technique, known as "waterboarding" is torture. The Senate voted 53 to 40 to confirm him. Mukasey replaces Alberto Gonzales, who resigned in September.
