Hey, there. I'm Josh Levs at the cnn. com newsroom in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening Now In The News.
The search is on for clues into Thursday's assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. A member of Bhutto's political party says it's clear Bhutto was shot in the head. But the government contends she died from a severe concussion and also says that it has no objection to her body being exhumed for an investigation. In despite of widespread security presence, violence continues across Pakistan. The Interior Ministry says at least 44 people have been killed since there is an assassination. Some 200 banks have been burned or destroyed.
Just five days to the Iowa caucuses, Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani spent the morning promoting his healthcare plan in central Iowa. Meantime John McCain heads New Hampshire all-time himself today. He is the only Republican on the trail in that state right now. New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary follows Iowa by just five days.
The San Francisco Zoo says it will reopen January 3rd even as police investigated a deadly tiger attack. It appears the tiger climbed over a wall that's four feet lower than the recommended minimum for zoos in the US. The zoo could face fines , lawsuits and even criminal charges and also could lose its license. The animal broke loose Christmas Day, killing seventeen-year-old Carlos Sousa and severely injuring two other visitors.
There is voter unrest in Kenya. These pictures came out from Kenya's capital, Nairobi. Riots broke out across Kenya after election officials announced a delay in tally returned in the tight presidential election. The unofficial tally from Thursday's vote shows opposition candidate Raila Odinga leading President Mwai Kibaki by some 300, 000 votes at about more than 7 million cast. Both sides are claiming victory. Results are expected to be released tomorrow.
And there's been a breakthrough in the writers' strike. Late night host David Letterman and Craig Feurgson will be back on the air Wednesday with full writing staffs. Letterman's company Worldwide Pants struck its own deal with the Writers Guild. Late night talk shows have been in reruns since negotiations broke down December 7th. Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel also return to work but without their writers.
