Hello I'm Josh Levs at the cnn.com newsroom in Atlanta. Here's a look at what’s happening Now In The News.
New information now on the death of two US soldiers killed in Iraq. It happened the day after Christmas. The US military says they were allegedly killed by an Iraqi army soldier during a joint operation near Mosul. The military says they don’t know why the Iraqi soldier opened fire on US troops. He is now in custody along with one other Iraqi soldier. Three US soldiers were wounded in the attack.
A previously unheard of Islamic group is claiming responsibility for killing US diplomat John Michael Granfield in Sudan. The group made the claim on several Islamist websites. Granfield was gunned down as he headed home from a New Year’s party early Tuesday. His body was flown back to the US yesterday.
The Golden State looking a lot whiter in places today. Snow has been falling for almost 48 hours. Forecasters predict the storm dump up to ten feet of snow in parts of the Seattle and Nevada. Road conditions are treacherous. A major highway from northern California to Nevada is now closed. Officials say several big rigs even tipped over in strong winds. Meantime flights have also been grounded. Heavy rains are causing problems in southern California. Thousands of people have been evacuated from mudslide-prone areas near Los Angeles. Flash floods are also a big concern.
Well, members of a missing family from Clovis California have been rescued after they got lost during this week’s storm. Search teams found 64-year-old John Hopper and his 15-year-old twins, Matt and Sarah, at a popular hiking destination in the Sierra National Forest. They were with three other people who apparently got trapped in the woods after the storm hit. All six were in good condition when searchers found them last night. The family had left Thursday morning to go playing in the snow.
Florida farmers are checking their crops for damage from a dip in a mercury. So far it looks like the citrus crop whether the cold temperatures with few problems. But tomato and strawberry growers report some crop damage. The freeze Thursday could hurt the state’s overall winter tomato production. Wish you get a better picture of crop damage Monday when the Agriculture Department releases a weekly progress report.
