[07:10.84]Michael:I first started using computers at school
[07:16.32]when I was 11.
[07:19.61]They fascinated me from the start,
[07:23.51]so much that I majored in computer science in college
[07:29.02]Interviewer:And is that when you began hacking?
[07:33.02]Michael:That's right.
[07:35.60]I broke into the school administration files.
[07:40.51]Interviewer:And no one caught you?
[07:43.70]Michael:No.
[07:45.97]Interviewer:It must have been difficult
[07:49.45]to get into the government's defense networks.
[07:53.94]Michael:It was easy.
[07:56.84]You see,the security administrators
[08:01.44]don't see enough to protect the systems.
[08:05.83]Protection of this kind is expensive;
[08:09.93]and it can slow the whole system down.
[08:14.42]Besides,no matter what kind of protection they install
[08:20.40]there's always some hacker out there
[08:24.71]who likes the challenge of breaking in anyway.
[08:29.20]Interviewer:What did you do when you got into these systems?
[08:33.91]Michael:Well,at college I was tempted to give myself
[08:39.39]a big scholarship,but I didn't.
[08:43.68]And when I got into national defense network,
[08:48.09]it was really just the satisfaction of doing it
[08:53.47]that I was after.
[08:56.27]They should thank me for pointing out the weaknesses
[09:01.44]in their system.
[09:04.24]Interviewer:But you got arrested instead.
[09:08.02]Michael:Yeah.
[09:10.43]Interviewer:And what are you planning to do
[09:13.72]when you get out of prison?
[09:17.30]Michael:Well,I'd like to work as a consultant
[09:21.71]advising companies and government agencies on their security systems
[09:27.90]If more of them hired hackers as consultants
[09:32.81]the world would be a much safer place.
[09:37.10]4.2 Retelling a story
[09:48.90]3.Now listen to the first part of the story:
[09:54.49]What was the girl's problem?
[09:58.10]What would you do if you were her?
[10:02.10]Discuss the possible solutions in small groups.
[10:07.01]Long ago,according to the law.when a person owed money
[10:14.90]he could be put into prison.
[10:18.61]In London there was a poor but honest blacksmith
[10:25.29]who owed an enormous sum of money to a businessman.
[10:30.88]The businessman was old and ugly
[10:35.48]and he liked the blacksmith's beautiful young daughter.
[10:40.37]He proposed a bargain.
[10:43.76]He said he would cancel the blacksmith's debt
[10:48.44]if he could marry the girl
[10:52.12]Both the blacksmith and his daughter
[10:56.54]were horrified at the proposal.
[11:00.53]So the cunning businessman said
[11:05.03]they should let Fate decide the matter.
[11:09.13]He told them that he would put a black stone
[11:15.42]and a white stone into an empty bag
[11:19.92]and then the girl would have to pick out one of these stones
[11:25.09]If she picked out the black stone she would become his wife
[11:30.68]and her father's debt would he canceled
[11:34.88]If she picked out the white stone
[11:38.46]she could stay with her father and the debt would still he canceled
[11:44.84]But if she refused to pick out a stone,
[11:49.83]her father would be thrown into jail.
[11:55.52]Reluctantly the blacksmith agreed.
[11:59.91]They were standing on a stony path as they talked.
[12:05.68]The businessman bent down to pick up two stones
[12:10.88]and put them into his bag.
[12:14.88]As he picked up the stones the girl noticed
[12:19.58]that he picked up two black stones.
[12:24.18]Then he asked the girl to pick out the stone

[12:58.03]and in your groups, retell it with the help
[13:03.31]of what you've done above.
[13:06.81]Well,the girl was very clever.
[13:11.12]She took a stone out of the bag
[13:15.92]and immediately dropped it on the stony path
[13:20.81]without looking at it and without letting anyone see it
