A US soldier facing disciplinary action crossed the inter-Korean border into North Korea on Tuesday and was believed to be in North Korean custody and creating a fresh crisis for Washington in its dealings with the nuclear-armed state.

The person was on a tour to the joint security area on the border separating the two Koreas.

CBS News said that before the incident, the soldier was being escorted back to the United States for disciplinary reasons.

But after going through airport security, they somehow returned and managed to join the border tour.

According to CBS, a person who was reportedly on the same tour, claims they witnessed the event.

Two US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the soldier had been due to face disciplinary action by the US military.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley says the Ukrainians are essentially keeping their powder dry while working their way through lethal defenses that the Russians have had months to set up.
