The US has put Yemen's Houthis back on its designated terrorist list and will pile sanctions on the Iranian-supported rebels.

The sanctions that come with a formal terror designation are meant to keep violent extremist groups from their funding sources.

US officials say the sanctions will be designed to minimize harm to Yemen's people, among the world's poorest and hungriest.

But aid groups worry the penalties will make a humanitarian crisis worse and critics say the sanctions may not even have much effect on the Houthis, a relatively isolated group with few known assets in the US that could be threatened by sanctions.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Israel cannot achieve genuine security without a pathway to a Palestinian state, insisting such a move could help unify the Middle East and isolate Israel's top rival Iran.

A spokesman for Qatar's Foreign Ministry says a shipment of medicine for dozens of hostages held by US-designated terrorist group Hamas has reached the Gaza Strip.
