[00:-1.00]While regular schools still exist,
[00:-2.00]the virtual classroom plays an important role in today's learning community
[00:-3.00]Job opportunities for students are expanding rapidly
[00:-4.00]and more people of all ages are becoming aware of online learning
[00:-5.00]that allows them to study at home.
[00:-6.00]Online students, however, require unique qualities to be successful
[00:-7.00]The following list discusses some ideal qualities of successful online students
[00:-8.00]1. Be open-minded about sharing life, work,
[00:-9.00]and learning experiences as part of online learning.
[00:10.00]Many different people find that the online method
[00:11.00]requires them to use their experiences
[00:12.00]and that online learning
[00:13.00]offers them a place to communicate with each other.
[00:14.00]This forum for communication removes the visual barriers
[00:15.00]that hinder some students from expressing themselves.
[00:16.00]In addition, students are given time to reflect on the information
[00:17.00]before replying.
[00:18.00]In this way,
[00:19.00]students can help to keep the online environment open and friendly.
[00:20.00]2. Be able to communicate through writing.
[00:21.00]In the virtual classroom nearly all communication is written
[00:22.00]so it is critical that students feel comfortable
[00:23.00]expressing themselves in writing.
[00:24.00]Some students have limited writing abilities
[00:25.00]which need to be improved before or as part of the online experience
[00:26.00]This usually requires extra commitment by these students.
[00:27.00]Whether working alone or in a group,
[00:28.00]students share ideas,
[00:29.00]perspectives and discussions on the subject being studied
[00:30.00]and read about those of their classmates.
[00:31.00]In this way, students gain great insight from their peers,
[00:32.00]learning from each other as well as the instructor.
[00:33.00]3. Be willing to "speak up" if problems arise.
[00:34.00]Remember that instructors cannot see their students
[00:35.00]in an online course
[00:36.00]This means students must be absolutely explicit
[00:37.00]with their comments and requests.
[00:38.00]If they experience technical difficulties,
[00:39.00]or problems in understanding something about the course
[00:40.00]they MUST speak up;
[00:41.00]otherwise there is no way anyone can know something is wrong
[00:42.00]If one person does not understand something,
[00:43.00]possibly several others have the same problem.
[00:44.00]If another student is able to help,
[00:45.00]she/he probably will.
[00:46.00]While explaining something to others,
[00:47.00]students reinforce their own knowledge about the subject
[00:48.00]4. Take the program seriously.
[00:49.00]Online learning is not easier than study in regular classrooms
[00:50.00]In fact, many students say
[00:51.00]it requires much more time and effort.
[00:52.00]Requirements for online courses are not less than those of any quality program
[00:53.00]Successful students, however,
[00:54.00]see online learning as a convenient way to receive their education
[00:55.00]— not an easier way.
[00:56.00]Many online students sit at computers for hours at a time
[00:57.00]during evenings and on weekends in order to complete their assignments
[00:58.00]When other people are finished and having fun
[00:59.00]is most likely the time when online students do their course work
[-1:00.00]Online students need to commit 4 to 15 hours a week for each course
[-1:-1.00]5.Accept critical thinking and decision making as part of online learning
[-1:-2.00]Online courses require students
[-1:-3.00]to make decisions based on facts as well as experience.
[-1:-4.00]It is absolutely necessary
[-1:-5.00]for students to assimilate information and make the right decisions
[-1:-6.00]based on critical thinking.
[-1:-7.00]In a positive online environment,
[-1:-8.00]students feel valued by the instructor,
[-1:-9.00]by their classmates and by their own work.
[-1:10.00]6. Be able to think ideas through before replying.
