体坛英语新闻:Joy in Cuba for gold medals at London Olympics

HAVANA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Cuban people are very happy with joy after hearing the first two gold medals from two athletes on Friday in London Olympics.

On Friday, Shooter Leuris Pupo grabbed Cuba's first gold medal of the London Olympics with a victory in the men's 25-meter rapid fire pistol. While, Idalys Ortiz of Cuba beat Mika Sugimoto of Japan to take the women's 78kg judo gold medal at the Olympic Games on Friday.

On the stress in Cuba, the people are very happy with joy the good news.

Lazaro Gonzalez said, "Pupo is good and set a new Olympic record. We expected a medal from him, may be silver or bronze, but he won gold at last.

"Judoka Ortiz is the best and should get the gold medal and the Cuba's people are enjoying that victory. We know that she also enjoys the victory with her family because she is worthy of champion," said Luis Matos.

While, Felix Sanchez said, "The fight of the judoka was very exciting because Ortiz is a woman with good results and really deserved the gold medal."

Yordanys Luis said that with regard to the judoka I think she deserved it and her coach is one of the best in Cuba.

She added, "these two gold medals lifted the morale of the delegation and both athletes had an excellent performance."

Jesus Fuentes said, "it is really nice to be obtained two gold medals that are very important for Cuba, and it will spirit up the other athletes continuing to have success in the Olympics."

"These two medals are very important to break the ice and we'll get others more. I expect Cuba will gain 6 or 7 more gold medals," Edgar Gonzalez said.

With these two gold medals Cuba climbed to 14th in the overall medal table and is country of Latin America and the Caribbean better located, with two gold and silver and one bronze.

Pupo, 35, born in eastern Cuban province of Holguin, has participated in four Olympic Games. His gold medal is the result of a rising Olympic career, also is a historic gold for Cuba's shooting sport. It was also Pupo's first medal in four Olympics journey. In Sydney 2000, Pupo achieved the ninth position, in Athens 2004 he ended in the eighth position and four years ago in Beijing 2008 he achieved the seventh position.

Idalys Ortiz, born in 1989 in Pinar del Rio, claimed Cuba's first Olympic judo title for 12 years. She won bronze at 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. She has won first positions for Pan American Judo Championships in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
