BARCELONA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sun Yang ensured that he will be remembered as one of the stars of the 15th world swimming championships held in Barcelona when he completed a gold medal treble and was named as the best male swimmer off the competition this Sunday.

Sun Yang went into the final of the 1,500 meters freestyle with gold medals from the 400 meters and 800 meters freestyle, as well as a bronze medal which he earned with a stunning swim in the last leg of the 4x200 meters freestyle relay.

He went into his final race as Olympic champion and world record holder and although Canada's Ryan Cochrane had said after the 800 meters final that he would be looking to change his tactics for the race, there was the feeling that if Sun got things right, Cochrane's tactics would be rendered irrelevant.

The Canadian made Sun suffer though, as the pair raced virtually side by side for 1,400 meters of the final before Sun kicked hard and pulled away in the last 100 meters, to finish around 3 meters ahead of his rival.

"This is an amazing night for me and I must thank my coach and all of the team for their support," he said.

"I am very tired now, but I also feel very satisfied. I thought this sort of success was for others, but now I have found out it was for me and I am very proud," he added

Sun's success comes at the end of a difficult year for the 21-year-old, which began with his appearances at sponsor related events being limited by the Zhejiang Institute of Sports, who had publicly criticized him and accused him of missing training sessions in a press conference on Feb 4, 2013.

The swimmer also fell out with his coach Zhu Zhigen and spend time training on his own. He explained after his triumph in the 800 meters that he had few problems in finding motivation.

"The pressure comes from inside myself and also from my environment. I am able to adjust very fast, said Sun, who also thanked his parents for their support after shedding tears on the podium.

"All of us have our own way of expressing our feelings and this is my way of doing this and thanking those who support me," he said.

"It has always been hard for the Chinese to win gold in swimming, but now we can compete against Americans and Australians," he said.

On Sunday, Sun looked back over his year. "After the Olympics I had to fix some problems, but now I am back again, I think this is a great time to be a young swimmer," he said, commenting that he had a year with a lot of races.

"There have been a lot of races and next year, maybe I will have more time to relax, although I want to do more practice," said Sun, whose next goal will be the Chinese national championships.

Thanks to Sun Yang' s impressive contribution of three gold medals in Barcelona, along with those of Zhao Jing, who took gold in the 50 meters backstroke and Liu Zige's success in the 200 meters butterfly, China left the World Championship with five golds from thee pool in the Palau St Jordi, surpassing the initial target of four set before the meet.
