RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Former Manchester City midfielder Elano said Monday he was "born to play at big clubs" after being officially unveiled as a Flamengo player.

The 32-year-old has joined the Rio de Janeiro outfit from Brazilian top-flight rivals Gremio on an one-year loan deal.

Speaking upon his presentation to the media on Monday, Elano said he was already thinking about the Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club trophy, which Flamengo won the right to contest by winning last year's Copa do Brasil.

"I was born to play at big clubs," Elano said. "It's the first time that I've had the opportunity to live and play in Rio de Janeiro. It's a privilege to be a part of this club that has just been crowned champions."

Elano, who has won 50 international caps for Brazil, said he hoped to impart his experience on his younger teammates.

"I want to be a reference on and off the pitch. I am here to collaborate and help. The most important thing are the results on the pitch and I'm going to endeavor to do the best for me and for Flamengo."

He said he hadn't given up hope of representing the Selecao at this year's World Cup.

"I'm never going to give up [on the national team]. I didn't have such a great season last year and that was my fault," he said.

"[But] I couldn't have made a better choice. If I start well, have a good Copa Libertadores, myself and other Flamengo players might have the chance to play in the World Cup," he said.
