国际英语新闻:Trump, Abe discuss DPRK, bilateral trade over phone
WASHINGTON, May 6 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump spoke over the phone with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday about the situation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and bilateral trade.
"Just spoke to Prime Minister Abe of Japan concerning North Korea (DPRK) and Trade," Trump tweeted.
He called the phone call with Abe a "very good conversation," without offering more details.
Trump noted late April during Abe's visit that Washington and Tokyo have a chance to reach a long-term trade deal. The two leaders, however, still disagree on the tariff issue.
According to the Japanese government, the phone conversation on Monday was held at Abe's request.
The two leaders are believed to have shared information gathered since the incident on Saturday, according to Japanese officials.
Several projectiles were launched Saturday towards the northeast from the DPRK's east coast city of Wonsan for 21 minutes, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The projectiles traveled some 70 to 200 km into eastern waters.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview aired on Sunday that the United States is "still evaluating the appropriate response" to the latest firing of projectiles by the DPRK.
