国际英语新闻:U.S. vice president visits Ireland
DUBLIN, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. vice president Mike Pence arrived in Shannon in west Ireland on Monday afternoon at the start of his two-day visit to the island country.
On Tuesday, he will fly to Dublin for a series of meetings and will meet Irish President Michael D Higgins and later meet Prime Minister Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
There have been a number of statements from campaigners and poets saying that his visit is not a cause of celebration.
Clare-based campaigner Ruairi Mckiernan said that while Pence likes to talk about his migrant roots in Ireland, he is part of a regime in the U.S. which is causing suffering to modern-day migrants.
Mckiernan is a former member of the Council of State and a founding member of the Uplift organization which campaigns on a number of issues, including support of migrants.
