100-day countdown to Shanghai World Expo
With only 100 days to go before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo opens, most pavilions at the Expo site have been completed or are nearly finished.
For the second time in less than two years, China will once-again open itself up to the world in a major way. Today marks the 100 day countdown to the opening of the World Expo in Shanghai. According to Expo officials, some 18 million tickets for the event, which runs from May 1st to October 31st, have already been sold. Some 192 countries, along with 50 different organizations, have already said they'll be taking part later this year. In putting the plan for the Expo together, officials estimated that Shanghai would see some 70 million visitors over the course of the event. As such, municipal authorities in Shanghai have been preparing for the influx, adding dozens of new public transit routes and other infrastructure projects to handle the estimated 400,000 additional people a day traveling through the city. And even though the final preparations are still taking place, one still has to wonder what sort of impact the World Expo will have on Shanghai, not only during the event itself, but on the city after the party is over.
