It's not only the price of burial plots that's on the rise. Funerals are also becoming a financial burden for many families across the nation, as they seek to provide eternal sanctuary for their dearly departed loved ones.

A pile of bills that shows just how expensive a funeral can be these days.

Mrs. Li from Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, spent nearly 78-hundred yuan on her mother's funeral.

Two thousand of that went on the coffin alone. The rest was for the ceremony and undertakers' fees.

Mrs. Li, Harbin resident said "When my mom was dying in hospital, someone just rushed into the room after the nurse made a phone call. He said his colleagues would help provide the whole service after my mom died."

So Mrs. Li trusted the undertakers to take care of the funeral.

Mrs. Li said "There's a board that lists all of the fees. And it appeared to be rather good value."

But she soon realized that was not the case, as the actual cost far exceeded her budget.

Mrs. Li said "I planned to reserve a room for the body to lie in that cost 50 yuan per day. But I was told there were no rooms available at that rate. So I could only choose the so-called `high end room,` which is four hundred yuan per day."

What's worse, the body was only there for 32 hours, but the funeral home charged 12-hundred yuan -- the amount for three days.

The ensuing procedures weren't any cheaper:

Flowers for 800 yuan

Six men walking about 20 meters, heaving the coffin, and putting it to the wagon ... 400 yuan;
6个男人举起棺材走差不多20米,把它放到殡仪车上——400元;

Four men playing music for only one minute ... 220 yuan;
4个男人奏一分钟的音乐——220元;

Wagon driving three miles ... 350 yuan;
殡仪车开3英里——350元;

And other services of 160 yuan.

The bills were coming in thick and fast.

When it finally came to the ceremony, Mrs. Li was required to pay another 850 yuan, although she'd already paid 250 yuan in cremation charges.

Mrs. Li said "Everybody is saying that it's just too expensive to die. I didn't fully understand that until now. It's not transparent. Even though I know it's unfair, I still should just accept it and be ripped off."

Mrs. Li says she also had to pay an additional thousand yuan to the funeral home. She still doesn't understand why burying her loved one has cost her so much - emotionally and financially.
