A major lack of rain has caused severe congestion at the Tai-er-zhuang section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in China's Shandong province. On Monday evening, more than 1,400 vessels remained stuck at a lock.
It's hard to imagine a waterway that looks like a parking lot for vessels. But that's exactly what over a month of severe drought in Shangdong province has caused along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
This is just one of the many images coming out of the region that show the uNPRecedented drought that has hit the southern and eastern parts of the country. The image of congested vessels may look impressive, but the vessel owners are certainly not happy with their plight.

Canal administrators are now playing the role of traffic controllers by directing smaller vessels passing through the locks.
Cai Wanfa, local canal administration, said, "The main problem is the water level. Right now we only allow the passage of vessels above a tonnage of 1500. Larger vessels are not allowed. Currently there are 960 vessels stuck below the lock, and 460 above the lock."
And the weather over the next few days won't be offering any help. China's National Meteorological Center says the prospects for rain in Shangdong province are rather slim in the next five days.
Linking richly-cultivated Southern China and the ancient imperial capital of Beijing, the Beijing-Hanghzou Grand Canal has played a major role in commercial transportation throughout Chinese history.
