The UN General Assembly has commenced a high level meeting on HIV/AIDS. The event promises to chart a new course for developing treatments against the deadly disease.

According to the latest figures issued by UNAIDS, more than 34 million people worldwide have the HIV virus that causes AIDS. Throughout the three-day meeting, world leaders will address the assembly and adopt a resolution to commit to "Getting to Zero", a 2015 target initiated by UNAIDS. Countries will commit to working aggressively to curb the spread of the virus and to providing treatment to as many of those affected as possible, over the next four years.

Michel Sidibe, Executive Director of Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, said, "It is not a question of paying now or paying later. Either we pay now, or we pay forever. Getting to zero also demands that we unleash the power of innovation. We can sustain our investment in research and development and we will have in five years time, simple and inexpensive diagnostics and medication that can be available to everyone, everywhere."
