Food prices were a major driver of May's high CPI figure. Vegetable prices, in particular, have been on the climb as severe weather affects their production in southern China.
At a wholesale vegetable market in Beijing, one manager says his costs have soared, as the products need to be transported in cool containers during the hot summer weather. That, in turn, drives up his, and others, vegetable prices. Meanwhile, uNPRedictable weather has also caused recent volatility in prices.
Liu Tong, Beijing Xinfadi Wholesale Market, said, "For example, farmers in Zhangjiakou couldn't harvest vegetables due to heavy hail, so the supply falls short the next day. Then the price increases. But if it's a light rain, a significant supply of vegetables will flood the market, and the price drops significantly."
Relying on other production bases hasn't been an option either. The severe weather in China's southern region has put pressure on vegetable supplies there.
Professor Zhu Xinkai, said, "Looking at the bigger picture, the prices of agricultural products won't have big impact on national prices. But that's on the condition there's no natural disasters. If the current drought or flood continues for months, the prices of agricultural products like food will be impacted greatly."
Meanwhile, farmers in China's eastern Shandong Province say the prices of vegetables they sell to southern provinces have increased a little. Analysts say there's room for prices to rise even further.
