Tourists and Romans alike splashed themselves with water from some of the Italian city's famous fountains on Monday as temperatures climbed to 33 degrees.

Temperatures are set to reach as high as 37 or even 40 degrees in cities like Messina, Pescara and Perugia, well-above the seasonal average. Several cities have even been classified as "at risk" by Italian authorities.
