The U.S. debt crisis has encouraged many investors to buy up big on gold, to hedge against the potential risks of investment options like the dollar and U.S. debts. And those who previously poured money into the precious metal are laughing all the way to the bank.

Mr. Shu is a businessman. But he's also a veteran investor with 10 years' experience. He started investing in gold early last year, and returns were lackluster at best.

But how things have changed. The recent U.S. debt crisis and Standard and Poor's downgrading of U.S. debt has turned things around for Mr. Shu's gold holdings. He began pouring money into the precious metal on the first trading day after the downgrade, and his foresight has paid off.

Shu said, "I bought in on August 8th, and gold prices increased that day. I sold gold the next day, and the deal brought me a yield of more than 20 percent."

Soaring gold prices are benefiting other investors like Mr. Shu.

Fu Jinjie, senior manager of Shanghai Yifeng Investment Management said, "Most investors are seeing good returns, with profits between 20 to 30 percent. Some investors even raked in up to 40 percent in profits."

But analysts also warn, investors should not be blindly optimistic, as there's always the possibility of declining gold prices.
