The approval rating on President Barack Obama's handling of the US economy has fallen to a new low of 26 percent, according to a Gallup poll released on Wednesday.

The poll came two weeks after Congress and the president reached an agreement on federal spending following a bitter political struggle that nearly caused the government to default on its debt. Meanwhile, the approval rating on the Afghanistan war saw a 15-percentage-point drop after hitting 53 percent following the killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
