The 22-year-old Taiwan Food Fair is underway, serving up the very best of over 100 years of regional culinary artistry. But still, the event manages to make traditional food a part of today's fast-paced local tourism scene.
During this year's food fair, a table of great food, called "Ban-Dou" in the local dialect, is being featured at the fair for the first time.
A visitor said, "At weddings, big birthdays and during Chinese New Year, we eat food like this. 'Ban-Dou' means every one gets together."
Red lanterns and Qing dynasty porcelain bowls are also back at this year's Taiwan Food Fair. They are part of Mr. Hong's attempt to bring back the flavor of Danzai noodles that his great-grandfather once sold in the streets over a hundred years ago. And in the condensed soup of Mr. Hong's noodles, one finds the rich history and culture of the region's cuisine.
Lin Qifeng, fair vendor, said, "One-hundred sixteen years to be exact. The Hong family used to sell noodles in these bins in the street."
The Hong family's noodles come from meticulously selected, regionally grown ingredients. And making the sauce requires a lot of attention and hours of distillation. It's all done to make sure the original flavor withstands the test of time.
From the street vendor's fast-food to gourmet cuisine, the 2011 Taiwan Food Fair makes sure that there's something for everyone.
