国际艾滋病大会在釜山举行

Several thousand participants from more than 55 countries are in Busan, South Korea, for the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific.

The 5-day event will cover key regional priorities such as ensuring greater focus on key populations at higher risk.

The Asia-Pacific region accounts for over 60 percent of the world's population. Close to 7 million HIV carriers and AIDS patients live there.

And a staggering 720-thousand have died from the disease. The World Health Organization says countries with the highest infection rates in the Asia-Pacific region are Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand, where every one out of a hundred persons is infected with HIV. China's infection rate is around point zero 5 percent.

Much of the current spread of HIV in China is through unsafe sex and intravenous drug abuse. In some areas, contaminated blood transfusions are also a major cause.
